I think a fair number of Senators and House members are worried that they will be implicated in the January 6 Insurrection–more accurately, they know they are but are worried about being found out. But another reason for Republican concern is that many of them knew exactly what they were dealing with–a subset of their base that they had strong feelings about, to say the least (boldface mine):
The Senate and House leaders also had been evacuated by Capitol Police and taken to an undisclosed location, but many lawmakers remained in their chambers for a few minutes before they were led to safety in the Hart Senate Office Building. Sen. Lindsey O. Graham was irate that senators were forced to flee their own chamber. He yelled at the Senate sergeant-at-arms. “What are you doing? Take back the Senate! You’ve got guns. Use them.” The South Carolina senator was adamant. “We give you guns for a reason,” he repeated. “Use them.”
I’ve long thought that very few of those elected officials who incited the violent overturn of a lawful and correct transition of power would face any consequences. It’s 21st century America after all, but it’s going to be hard to walk back calling for shooting your own supporters. Though it does explain his all-in embrace of Trump post-January 6.
Maybe there’s a little hope for a little bit of justice.
