Contrasting Biden with Trump

It goes without saying that if the choice is between Biden and Il Trumpe, it’s a no-brainer: vote Biden. But, despite claims of Biden’s electability, a Biden nomination would make it harder to draw distinctions with Trump. For example, Biden has repeatedly argued we need to means test Social Security (we don’t), which will–correctly–be turned into ‘Biden wants to cut Social Security.’ (I’ve laid out a summary of why that’s shitty policy here; here’s the long march going back over a decade).

Because Trump just did something very stupid–and politically costly–that even voters who don’t care about racism won’t like (boldface mine):

Conservative groups — which largely supported Mr. Trump’s tax cuts — have pushed Congress to cut future deficits by reducing benefits for federal health care and retirement programs, like Medicare and Social Security. “Something must be done soon,” the conservative advocacy group FreedomWorks said in a news release on Wednesday, “and that means taking a hard look at mandatory spending, the root cause of the United States’ fiscal woes.”

Republicans do not believe Mr. Trump is likely to push for cuts to a pair of popular retirement programs — and risk exposing himself to attacks in a re-election campaign — before a second term. But they acknowledged that efforts to curb the projected growth in so-called mandatory federal spending were warranted….

Reducing the costs of Social Security, Medicare and other contributors to the debt is “usually best done during divided government,” said Senator John Barrasso, Republican of Wyoming. “We’ve brought it up with President Trump, who has talked about it being a second-term project.”

Because Trump publicly lies multiple times a day, he can’t deny this didn’t happen, and if he does, that just gives Democrats an opportunity to recite a litany of all of his broken economic promises, followed with the conclusion of ‘you lied then, you’re lying now.’

But Biden’s austerioeroticism is a real problem: because he has supported Social Security cuts, he can’t very well hammer Trump on something that will scare the hell out of older (and older-ish) voters. While Social Security isn’t a sexy issue, especially for those damn meddling kids, it is a salient issue for many voters.

The supposedly electable Biden, however, just pisses that advantage away.

My objections to Biden have been based on his very long and very ugly past record. Today at the Naked Capitalism site was something which I found to be just as alarming:

^^^ Then Biden came out. As I said last night, very frail, fragile, and super thin. Slow, deliberate steps. Skin was tissue-papery and getting to that translucent stage that very elderly people can have. I was so shocked. He looks at least 85-90, not 76. ^^^

Call it a “double” problem now for me.
