    That first link really changed the way I think about bacteria.
    I had thought they were random, independent, only passively benefitting from one another by accidents of evolution. It seems they are far more ‘social’ than I imagined, signalling each other with a wide array of chemical compounds as well as genetic code snippets.
    That kind of complexity is surely comparable to the complexity of cellular interaction in higher life forms, where hormones and other chemical signals activate or suppress portions of the genetic code as well as protein production and many other processes. In the case of bacteria, however, genes themselves can be exchanged with other species.
