    It may be true that no one person can unify our country. However, Waldman’s premise that the country is strongly divided in terms of policies is false. Polls repeatedly show many policies that have the support of more than 60% of the citizenry, yet never become law. And there are surprises, such as the sudden legalization of gay marriage, despite the existence of strong differences of opinion. Acquiescing in the idea of ideological deadlock is a way of giving in.
