25% Of Non-Black Clinton Supporters Are Bigoted Sh-theads: Blanket Definitions Of Voting Blocs Are Stupid

See update below

And shithead non-black Sanders supporters are at about twenty to thirty percent, if that makes you feel any better.

Last week, Reuters released a poll which asked supporters of various presidential candidates about their attitudes towards black people.

(Aside: Originally, Reuters didn’t release the Sanders data, which is revealing about the political bias of the Reuters political news staff. Because John Kasich is clearly more relevant right now than Sanders. Or something.)

Here’s what Reuters found:

USA-ELECTION-RACE5

The obvious point is that a high–and much higher–percentage of Trump supporters are shitheads (‘shitheads’ is a highly technical sociological term). But it’s not like Clinton or Sanders (who has the smallest percentage of shitheads. But intersectionality Berniebros! something something…) have a vanishingly small number of assholes (‘assholes’ is a synonym of shitheads, in case you’re confused). Keep in mind, those percentages include all supporters, including black supporters: Clinton’s numbers, and to a lesser extent Sanders’, need to be adjusted upwards (it’s not unreasonable to assume that one in five or one in six Clinton supporters is black). At the same time, I think it’s same to assume Cruz, Kasich, and Trump aren’t getting much in the way of black supporters.

The point is not to rehash the Democratic primary, but to make the point, once again, that there are votes out there to be had. After all, a significant fraction of non-black (no idea what Latino or Asian data are like for the poll, so I’ll lump them in with ‘non-black’) Clinton supporters are bigoted assholes. Surely, this doesn’t mean all Clinton supporters are assholes and that they should be ignored.

If you’re concerned about Clinton losing (not likely at this point), or simply want to ‘run up the score’ so as to crush Trump and help down ballot Democrats, categorically ruling out working-class whites, on the assumption they’re all irredeemable racists, is foolish–for that matter, not all Trump supporters are bigoted assholes. Yes, many will be assholes, but not all of them. And a few percentage points here and there will matter.

Does this mean Democrats should dog-whistle or change their positions on social issues? Absolutely not. But not intentionally alienating people who might be tempted to vote for you, like this writer wants to do*, is stupid and counterproductive. Because it’s not about your fucking feelings or asserting one’s identity, but getting votes. Many won’t abandon their racism, as it’s an important organizing principle which, sadly, helps them ‘understand’ things, but some will–and if Clinton and Sanders are any indication, some already have.

Let’s be…pragmatic about this.

Update: I’ll assume ‘instructor error’ on my part (never blog when you have a cold), but I thought this was pretty clear:

If you’re concerned about Clinton losing (not likely at this point), or simply want to ‘run up the score’ so as to crush Trump and help down ballot Democrats, categorically ruling out working-class whites, on the assumption they’re all irredeemable racists, is foolish–for that matter, not all Trump supporters are bigoted assholes. Yes, many will be assholes, but not all of them. And a few percentage points here and there will matter.

Both politically and ethically, we shouldn’t drive away good people who could be convinced to vote for a good candidate. And the data are clear: even among Trump supporters–the worst of the worst–there are non-racists.

At the same time, Democrats (and I’m a life-long Democrat) need to realize that a significant fraction–though far less than Republicans–of our supporters are also bigoted. Certainly, in this election cycle, their racism has be ignored in terms of policy positions (which is a good thing), but that hasn’t always been the case (think crime or welfare reform and 1990s).

*In the case of Brexit, which was very close, this is really stupid.

If I’ve learned anything over the years, its that pretty much everyone is racist. Obviously my Trump-voting neighbors and Fox-watching relatives are racist shitheads. I acknowledge I have some racist leanings myself, which I try to avoid and lessen when I catch myself at them.

But… And this is a big but (as it were); Black people I know have said some quite shockingly racist things to me about Asians and Jews. Asian people in my life have said some eyebrow-raising things about “those people” in reference to Hispanics and Blacks. My upper middle class trust-fund baby Filipino friend basically told me to my face that as a white person, my opinion and life experiences were invalid (when speaking of something that had just happened to me, three consecutive times). This whole thing where we act like racism is some kind of black-white only dynamic seems extremely dumb and misguided to me.
