So I click through to the animal poop article and a little pop-up pops up in the corner of my screen, “The Investor’s Guide to Climate Change” – http://www.theatlantic.com/sponsored/morgan-stanley/the-investors-guide-to-climate-change/696/ I know I shouldn’t be surprised that there are people putting more effort into working angles to cash in than on solving the problem but the directness of the advertisement caught me off-guard.

Re American chestnuts: A friend gave me a few seeds a few years back. I planted a couple and gave one to my father-in-law. He’s a retired forester who knows more about forest ecology as anyone I know so I figured he’d have a better chance of getting a tree out of a nut than I would. That was an accurate assessment. About a week later an enterprising squirrel (or other critter) appropriated the seeds I planted but my in-laws now have a 2-3 ft seedling on their property. We’ll see if it lives.

I was aware of the American-Chinese hybridization program. I hope it pans out. For what it’s worth, there’s a mail order nursery which advertises seedlings from what the claim are blight-resistant seeds – https://www.chiefrivernursery.com/store/American-Chestnut-Seedlings-6-12.html
