That article on the Jewish kingdom in Ethiopia didn’t mention Judith the Falasha. When we were in Tigray in 2019, we visited a number of the churches carved into the rock walls of canyons. We didn’t go to any of the ones that required scaling rock walls. In at least two of the churches, there were signs of burning, and we were told that this was done by Judith the Falasha, the queen of a neighboring Jewish kingdom. (I won some brownie points with one of the priests by having learned enough of the local writing to recognize Michael Gabriel on one of the paintings.)

Thanks for a great article on archeological work that may possibly resurface the Judith’s kingdom. I met my first falasha when they integrated my public school. She was the first black Jew I had met. I was old enough to be surprised but not old enough to be properly curious. Israel evacuated most of the remaining Jews from Ethiopia decades back, so I imagine that a lot of them took their stories with them.
