  1. Zachary Smith says:

*** Trump’s Plan to Host the G-7 Revives the Issue of Emoluments ***
^^^ What society chooses not to punish tells you the most about the prevailing moral standards of any age. ^^^
That’s the key part. A rule or law which is not enforced effectively doesn’t exist.

*** Walmart’s Announcement and Other Signs of Hope in the Gun Crisis ***
I don’t see that Hope. IMO the author is excessively optimistic.

    *** Alaska’s universal basic income problem ***
    All-around informative reading.

*** DOE has decided many lightbulbs don’t have to meet efficiency standards ***
Why does Trump need to constantly prove he is a moron?

    *** The degrowth delusion ***
The author’s writing style makes his message mostly opaque to me. He seems to believe Capitalists won’t solve the problem of Climate Change, and I agree. His devotion to nuclear power makes me wonder if the man has any knowledge at all about energy storage techniques. Mostly this piece remains a mystery to me.

*** The American Medical System Is One Giant Workaround ***
This gem sits next to the “degrowth” link, and I found it a model of clarity. The US medical system IS a terrible kludge.

*** Support for Biden Is An Irresponsible Gamble With Our Future ***
If Biden becomes the Democratic nominee for President, he’ll either win the election or he’ll lose it. IMO the rest of us will lose in either event. Like with Hillary, Biden has a long track record, and it’s almost as ugly as hers. Unfortunately the DNC is going to take its best shot at ramming him down our throats.

*** The Coming Reckoning Over the Electoral College ***
The US Supreme Court has a majority of Right Wing Nuts. The chances of them making a bad situation (faithless electors) even worse are not trivial.

    *** No sane reason ***
Just guessing now, but I’d say the “reason” comes down to those pesky Benjamins. Confining the man cost money, and he occupied a room. Rather than build some more rooms, the decision was made to declare him OK and release him I’d be curious to know about the budget allowed for the people who are supposed to monitor the released persons. What’s their caseload? What’s their competence? Somebody’s useless nephews or nieces. Or perhaps the lowest paid and worst treated workers in the building? In the past I’ve read Saint Reagan was the one who emptied the insane asylums. Wouldn’t surprise me if that’s not the case. The man was a senile old fool.

*** Why Renewables Can’t Save the Climate ***
Author of this one is a totally worthless Piece Of Shit. He appears to be Forbes’ answer to Bret Stephens. I’m not going to waste my time writing any more about his stupid blather.

*** The “eat less meat” movement is growing. Does it distort science? ***
Big Fossil Fuels and the Koch Brothers are going to be throwing sacks of all kinds of “stuff” at the fan to try to distract attention from the primary issues of Climate Change. High probability this is one of them. It’s akin to demonizing people who fly on jet airliners. Change The Subject! Somebody may invent a machine into which we push tons of freshly cut alfalfa or chopped silage and watch as meat-equivalent (taste and nutrition) protein patties come out the other end. Hasn’t happened yet, and isn’t darned likely. As Lincoln once said, One War At A Time!
What we do NOT need is a repeat of the Big Ethanol industry – a stupid and losing proposition if there ever was one. We can start treating our food animals better and doing better for meat industry workers. Banning feed lots and returning markets for grass-fed beef from small farmers is worth considering. But triple-priced “feel-good” burgers are going to be just what the doctor ordered for the Kochs and Exxon and the rest of the CO2 big boys – another reason for the Deniers to have a field day.
