Tanks for the Independence Day Memories

I don’t really think parking a few tanks on the Fourth of July in D.C. is the first step to martial law. I’m much more concerned about the border patrol detaining journalists who attempt to exercise their rights. That said, the tanks are offensive because they show a complete misunderstanding of what Independence Day is about. Despite its past and current imperfections (to put it mildly), the day is supposed to celebrate the democratic decision by a civilian authority to declare independence.

It is not a day to celebrate or commemorate the military. We already have holidays for that (not to mention the NFL’s best efforts to turn Thanksgiving into yet another military holiday). This is when we’re supposed to celebrate our democracy.

Of course, that’s why Il Trumpe and others want the tanks and other military displays.
