I read ‘industrial park’ and ‘medical lab’ and ‘burly guy comes out’ and a description of one lone guy dressed in ski clothes standing around outside in really cold weather, and thought ‘medical researcher vs animal liberation front.’ so yeah, I’m basically on the same side as the (now banned, apparently) commenter sluggeaux on this one.
that said, I’m not happy about the possibility of a national id database, even if it is only (probably) all the state driver license databases are separate, but easily searchable by any other states’ law enforcement personnel.
Of course police (and others) cooperate and share information about identity across state lines.
Otherwise, people could just work their way through losing their drivers license in multiple states and just starting over all the time.
(For those who don’t know, you’re not allowed to have drivers licenses in multiple states simultaneously.)
But I don’t think technically it’s a national database they’re pulling from. I think each state probably has its own database, and they just share it on demand. Which in the end I guess is as good as a national database.
But I’m just so surprised that anyone’s surprised about this.
But also wonder why someone would want egregiously reckless drivers to be able to just start over in new states when they get suspended somewhere.
Or surgeons… like that horrifying & awful spinal surgeon in Texas who was run out of other states. I’m sure some people involved in that wished there was more across state lines communication on that guy.
At any rate, when it comes to big data, the cat’s kind of out of the bag.
I think the real issue here is that we just need to consider more carefully who we entrust with this type of data, and how we treat them in these positions, to attract the right kind of upstanding people to those jobs and make sure they’re competently trained to use it appropriately.
For example, not total a-holes.
