here is THE THING that all you liberal and progressive democrats in other parts of the us of a refuse to understand or believe — many (possibly most) of the democrats down here in the deep south were dixiecrats, and always will be dixiecrats, no matter which party they belong to at whichever moment in time.

here is the other thing that liberal and progressive democrats in other parts of the us of a refuse to believe or understand — when the republican party wooed those dixiecrats away from the democratic party, the liberal and moderate (and even some of the somewhat conservative) republicans moved to the democratic party.

so, right now, here in the deep south, the democratic party is largely a mixture of (a) moderate republicans who really do hate racism and sexism, and (b) some socialists and social democrats.

that means the republican party got a lot of the economic populists because they now have the john birchers, and religious zealots, and the dixiecrats, and assorted others who would be happy to back anything in the socialist or democratic socialist realm — as long as the straight white dudes get more of it, whatever “it” is.

this is one of the downsides of living in a country with basically only 2 parties — each of the 2 major parties is really only a confluence of some minor parties that agree on a lot of things but not everything.

Just read the “How to save money at the hospital” article. Terrifying.

I live in Canada. Usually our main worry about saving money at the hospital is “How much is parking”. Some hospitals charge exorbitant parking fees.
