Maybe I should have worn this hat?
I was going to write a magnus opus about the Tea Bugger rally on the Boston Common on Wednesday. But, as we used to say in more civilized times, meh. Basically, there was an hour of some really schlocky pseudo-patriotic music, wherein every third word was freedom (FREEE-DOM! Gives the whole notion of freedom a bad name). Then between ‘songs’, we would be regaled with stories of heroic sacrifices by soldiers, followed by other sentences that were heavy with “freedom” and “amen.” Because opposing taxes on the wealthiest is just like storming the beaches at Normandy. Except it’s not. Then the musical assault would begin anew.
The rally was truly weird–and not just due to the stated purpose. There were probably as many people opposed to the Tea Buggers as there were Tea Buggers. We anti-Tea Buggers were ready to roll…and it was really dull. Seriously, break out the Barcaloungers. It was very anticlimatic. I certain got the impression that the Buggers were expecting something more. The organizers really didn’t seem to give a damn about the attendees. And Palin’s message: clearly, the new Palin is trying to be an ‘optimist’–she has TV deals to promote after all!
You did have various people holding “Don’t Tread on Me” flags, with very stoic and earnest expressions. My friend’s Great Dane, Buster, decided to go with that, settled down on his haunches, and also looked very stoic (he is a beautiful looking dog). Well, for about a minute, and then he decided to sniff THAT SPOT! RIGHT THERE! Cuz he’s a dog. Watching Buster play with another dog was probably the most interesting thing during the entire rally (except when he briefly started howling during one of the FREEE-DOM songs. He likes singing and cheering along with people).
I did see a couple of guys in shades, very short hair, and some camo with very manly belt accessories. Another person tried to convince me to sign a petition to impeach Obama.
But overall, the Tea Buggers are just conservative Republicans, with a big asshole streak.
In other words, they’re the same fucking morons that the Coalition of the Sane has been suffering from for the last thirty years. Why is anyone listening to these dopes? Or more importantly, what does it say about the Republican Party that they have to?
