Sen. George “Macaca” Allen (R-VA) is quite possibly one sick puppy:
Shelton said he also remembers a disturbing deer hunting trip with Allen on land that was owned by the family of Billy Lanahan, a wide receiver on the team. After they had killed a deer, Shelton said he remembers Allen asking Lanahan where the local black residents lived. Shelton said Allen then drove the three of them to that neighborhood with the severed head of the deer. “He proceeded to take the doe’s head and stuff it into a mailbox,” Shelton said.
If this is substantiated further, it’s clear the man is missing circuits in his head. Keep in mind, Allen was being touted as a serious Republican presidential candidate.
fear the brown planet!
Also from the Salon article:
That is true. Again, it is unsubstantiated, and I would add that one cannot make an actual diagnosis of someone by reading an article about them, but behavior like that is overtly antisocial. And that does not change readily. It may soften, but it does not go away.
I would also add that this was over 30 years ago.
Doesn’t mean he’s not a jerk now, but complaining about this action is equal to complaining about “not inhaling”. Either what is ancient past is ancient past, or it isn’t. It’s only if from this, you can trace a history of actions like it from then to “macaca” that you can say this is important for understanding the man now.
he’s a jerk now because of what he does now. i’m not going to worsen my opinion of him because of some childish prank (with or without racial overtones) 30+ years ago.
note: this isn’t saying that Bush’s hypocracy over his seeming lack of service while serving isn’t notable in spite of its age – Bush ran on a campaign of “personal responsibility”, not “i was a jerk once and got better (kinda)”.
Both The New Republic and Salon are reporting that the roommate of one of the football players remembers them talking about the deer head incident. He doesn’t remember them metioning the race of the recipient, but he does remember the deer head in the mailbox. I guess that’s the kind of detail that would tend to stick in your memory.
Joe Shelby: Childish prank? Seems much more telling than stealing a record album from a WalMart to me. Seems more like the kind of action taken by a psycho that wouldn’t mind getting America into a shooting war in the mid-east…
I have done things when younger that would disqualify me from presidential consideration, but the difference is that I am not trying to run for office. A man’s got to know his limitations…
