I visited the American Museum of Natural History in New York this weekend. Every time I visit, I always learn something, although it’s not always particularly profound (as you’ll see shortly). In the Hall of Ocean Life is a full-sized model of an opah, a large fish that can grow up to 200 pounds and four feet long. Here’s a picture:


What a neat fish. There’s no real point to this post, I just find it amazing that a fish this big is so colorful. Go opah!

Update: Right now, we have no idea whether the opah is in danger. It’s typically not harvested intentionally, and it’s usually just bycatch. Given that we’ve overfished every fish that’s become ‘trendy’, I hope the opah stays unknown.
