Dozens of pregnant women, some bleeding or in labor, are turned away from ERs despite federal law

Why isn’t the US building subways?
1. It’s invested in suburbia rather than pedestrian-friendly mixed use–potential passengers have physical barriers to walk to the stops.
2. Light rail is 1/10th the cost of heavy rail (subways). Bus Rapid Transit is 1/10 the cost of light rail. BRT would make sense, but see #1.
3. There’s been a concerted attack on the public realm — the part of civic design available to everyone freely. This is part of “labor discipline” — the message that you had better take whatever crappy job is on offer, or suffer the indignities of poverty (and we’ll make sure it’s plenty undignified) even homelessness and starvation. And if you’re rebellious, we’ll put you in a cage.
