And as one person noted yesterday on Bluesky (not me!), yesterday’s interview with the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) likely will be both Trump’s least and most racist day of the campaign for the foreseeable future.
If you missed it, among other things Trump uttered during his NABJ interview–which was so disastrous, his aides came out and pulled him off the stage*–was this:
Trump also falsely claimed that Harris, who is of Indian and Black heritage, didn’t always identify as Black. “She was always of Indian heritage, and she was only promoting Indian heritage. I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago, when she happened to turn Black, and now she wants to be known as Black. So I don’t know, is she Indian, or is she Black?” Trump said.
Look, Trump and his supporters are going to be even worse from here on out: they’re going to do so many racisms, you probably won’t even remember this one. But what bothers me is the reflexive impulse on the left, construed broadly, to be OFFENDED and OUTRAGED. We just had a very successful week calling Republicans weird, but just one bigot eruption and we’re back to being OFFENDED and OUTRAGED.
That is exactly what Republicans want. It makes us look weak and whiny, and them look dangerous and edgy. Instead, keep mocking and taunting them. Imagine a reaction along these lines (needs wordsmithing, but you get the gist; this isn’t my fucking job):
This is as weird as anything written in Project 2025. He believes a person can’t be more than one thing: he thinks Kamala Harris can’t be both black and Indian, like you get a limited number of ‘identity points’ or something. But of course she can! Just like Donald Trump can be both a rapist and a racist. By the way, did you see the part in the interview where Trump leans over and tightens the interviewer’s water bottle? They’re just so weird and creepy about everything.
If nothing else, this approach will be better for your mental health. Remember how happy people were 24 hours ago when we were mocking them? They were awful racists then too. So remember, they’re weird creeps, not sources of OFFENSE and OUTRAGE.
*Also, stop thinking every disaster for Trump will somehow become a triumph. It was a fucking disaster for him, the only question remaining is how bad.

Huh, all the responses I’ve seen have been about how weird it is that he’s so obsessed by her heritage. Who does that? Like you can be both. So bizarre.
