Over the past week, Rolling Stone has been releasing portions of a conversation with Supreme Court Justice Alito and his wife, Martha_Ann. To me, this is the worst of the leaks–and it comes from Martha_Ann Alito (boldface mine):
She also shared with Windsor that she has fantasized about flying “a Sacred Heart of Jesus flag, because I have to look across the lagoon at the Pride flag for the next month.” I’m Catholic too. I grew up with Sacred Heart of Jesus imagery in my childhood home. But to use that image to combat LGBTQ Pride this month doesn’t seem like something Jesus would do.
Imagine getting that bent out of shape over a Pride flag. Not a massive 24 hours sound and light display, just a flag. The only people who do this are anti-LGBTQ bigots.
Suppose she had said she wanted to do this in response to a menorah in someone’s window? Would there be any doubt that would be antisemetic? No one would fail to recognize what that would mean–and people would rightly ask if Alito shared those opinions.
So the only question remaining is if Alito can fairly try cases involving LGBTQ people. (I suspect I know what the correct answer is!).
We not only have at least two insurrectionists on the Supreme Court, we likely have at least one anti-LGBTQ hater too*.
The Dignitude of the Court and Its Jurisprudence something something….

Is the sacred heart of Jesus the one where his thorn crowned heart is visible in the middle of his chest and his eyes seem to be looking right at you wherever you are? My mother hung one of those in my bedroom when I was a kid and it is freaky as hell when you don’t understand how it works!
