  1. John Guilt says:

I really, really disagree with Bill Gates on how he endorses test rationing. He suggests first priority goes to health care workers themselves, second priority to the most symptomatic cases. This is pretty much how it is, with the unmentioned caveat that the rich and well-connected have priority as well. But this is a great way to collect garbage data that gives absolutely no information about who actually has the virus and how prevalent it is. It also forecloses potential treatments: antivirals are likely to be most effective if given early, and many people would be glad to donate convalescent plasma to help others but cannot because they never received the test to prove it. Finally, it ensures that we’ll never be able to practice a containment and tracing strategy. And Bill Gates isn’t just some guy – he’s a guy with lots and lots of money. He could do something to make COVID testing universally accessible if he wanted.
