A National Democratic Party Should Be Able To Walk And Chew Gum At The Same Time

In my lonely push to get Democratic Rep. Richard Neal to request Trump’s income and corporate taxes (though it’s increasingly becoming less lonely!), something he, as chairman of the Ways and Means committee, has the statutory authority to do, I run into people who argue that focusing on Trump et alia’s malfeasance is a distraction.

This makes little sense. First, emphasizing Trump’s bad policies, such as shredding the ACA (Obamacare), while referring to his financial shenanigans, only makes the argument stronger: this greedy guy is enriching himself while taking away your healthcare. Second, a national party should be able to pursue multiple things. Some politicians–especially those running for president–can accentuate the positive, while others dig up the dirt. Who knows? Maybe some of that dirt will stick. There is this weird philosophy, from the Democratic Party leadership on down, that holds a party can do and try multiple things at the same time. If you don’t try something, all that tells you is that it, by definition, won’t work (because you never tried it).

So get his damn taxes already.
