Though I’m not sure the execution here was entirely flawless (boldface mine):
NISKAYUNA — A Democratic Committee campaign mailer prompted a swift and firm response Monday from Republican town supervisor candidate Yasmine Syed…
The mailer features pictures of nationally recognized conservative, right-wing media figures Alex Jones, Steve Bannon and Rush Limbaugh and reads, “The things we value most are under attack in Washington, and they are under attack in Niskayuna.”
The other side of the card calls Syed and Town Board candidates Tom McGarry and Anthony Simone “too extreme for Niskayuna.”
The mailer accuses Niskayuna Republicans of sharing a video from Alex Jones on its Facebook page. The flier also says the Republican’s Facebook page “constantly features material from the website Breitbart, which features racist, anti-Semitic and anti-Muslim material.” Finally, the mailing says, “They often post material from Rush Limbaugh…”
…In a statement issued in response to questions about the mailer, the Niskayuna Democratic Committee said: “The mailer in question doesn’t call the candidates racist, anti-Semitic and anti-Muslim, as the GOP asserts. It says the Niskayuna Republican Committee shared posts from Breitbart News — a website which features racist, anti-Semitic, and anti-Muslim material and is run by Steve Bannon.
“The Niskayuna Republicans have shared a total of 37 posts from Alex Jones, Rush Limbaugh, and Breitbart News — the mouth pieces of the alt-right. We, as Democrats, denounce these outlets and the ideologies they espouse. By sharing these posts, the Niskayuna GOP is legitimizing these outlets and the message they deliver.”
There are several key points here. First, Republicans for years have gotten away with playing footsie with the worst elements of their party. They only oppose Limbaugh, Jones, and others when it embarrasses them. It’s essentially a dog whistle to their batshitloonitarian base, and it needs to be identified.
Second, it’s actually a fair issue: Limbaugh, Jones, and Breitbart, when they’re not absolutely bonkers, are hate mongers. If you are promoting their work, then you are endorsing their views–and you character is reflected in that decision. Do you really want someone who thinks Breitbart is a legitimate news source making decisions about education, policing, and others issues? No, you really don’t. Nothing wrong with noting that.
Finally, local elections in off years are always have low turnout. To the extent this fires up reliable Democrats (and somewhat reliable ones too), this is a good thing.
Like I said, I don’t know if the execution was good, but we need to stop individual Republicans from disassociating themselves from the Republican Party when it’s convenient for them.
