And, no, I’m not talking about porn that takes place in houses (I’ll leave that to the state government of Utah). I mean the genre, both in its online and print incarnations, that shows beautiful houses or apartments. What’s weird is when I see a ‘real’ house–one that is actually lived in by someone–and there are very few books. If you see a fifty-something couple and they only have a couple short shelves of books, that strikes me as very sad. Over thirty years of being adults and they have very few books.
Just a weird things I notice.
Housing porn is like porn porn, it’s to spur viewer fantasies. I’ll bet books are moved out of rooms when photos are taken to remove as much of the actual owners’ personalities as possible. The fantasy they’re selling is, this could be my house!
Food for thought maybe they’re avid library goers? My godparents go through almost a book a week, but they only have one shelf of books at home that they actually own.
There was a multi-million dollar house showcased on the WSJ Real Estate site that had one room decorated in old-book wallpaper. But if you really want the look of an educated dweller, you should shop at booksbythefoot-dot-com. For real.
