An Excellent Way to Piss Off Congress

And cue Republican Congressional outrage in …3…2…1…:

Ward 8 Councilmember LaRuby May today introduced legislation that would replace Columbus Day with “Indigenous Peoples’ Day” in D.C., a symbolic shift that other U.S. cities—including Los Angeles, Olympia, and St. Paul—have considered or even already enacted.

“We know [about] the demise of the culture of the people that happened when the Europeans came,” May said before the D.C. Council’s Committee of the Whole. “We’re very excited to make sure we’re highlighting and celebrating the history of indigenous people in the District.”

Given how often Republicans attempt to overrule the D.C. government on things that really matter*, watching them blow a gasket over this will be entertaining–and I do love public entertainment.

*While D.C. has home rule, any law passed by the District can be overturned by Congress, leading to all sorts of shenanigans to convince voters back home that their hearts are in the right place. It’s fun being a colonial.
