What Does “Liberal” Mean?

I ask this because, based on my Twitter stream as well as the parts of the internet I peruse, I have no idea anymore. It seems to mean everything from far-leftist ideologues (which I am apparently, since I want single-payer insurance and a minimum wage that has kept pace with GDP increases) to white people who are kinda racist, to New Democrats (which would be a surprise to said New Democrats). A recent Gallup poll claims that thirty percent of liberals view the NRA as “mostly favorable” or “highly favorable” which strains credulity.

I know I’m not a progressive–that too seems to be a meaningless term–but at this point liberal doesn’t seem to describe much either, other than “not conservative.”

I can’t help but think this might be a problem.

This is considered “sane” not necessarily “liberal” in most of the OECD and probably much of the rest of the world. I would not be surprised to find that most senior executives in large companies in most of the world are in favour of single-payer insurance. Other approaches get expensive fast.

I think “liberal” is today in the same condition as “fascist” was when George Orwell wrote about it at the end of WWII.

A Liberal is a member of the Liberal Democrat Party of course!

  4. Gingerbaker says:

Why defining liberal is hard is because the Democratic party has no fracking idea what it stands for. Which is why they lose elections to radical Republicans who should be easy to beat.
