File this under “We’re doomed” (boldface mine):

“He should have had troops in there a while ago,” Mr. Taylor, 47, a carpenter, said. “To me, it just seems like he kind of protects the Muslim people.”

Admittedly, one should be skeptical of NY Times quotes, but if we take this quote at face value, it makes no sense. If we put troops in Iraq and/or Syria, we will be doing so to protect some Muslims from other Muslims.

We are so out of our depth. Worse, we don’t seem to remember that our record has been one long glorious saga of failure.

I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t see how this ends well.
