Among the firehose of awfulness yesterday, White House Press Secretary Karolina Leavitt claimed, “DOGE and OMB also found that there was about to be $50 million taxpayer dollars that went out the door to fund condoms in Gaza.” This appears to be a new–completely made up right-wing talking point.
But what’s important for everyone to (re)learn is that Leavitt has no problem with lying openly–and ridiculously–to the American people and the press corps. Mind you, this wasn’t a case of attempting to weasel or dodge, it was a straight-faced utterance of a ridiculous falsehood, unworthy of even Sean Spicer (remember him?). A responsible press corps (yes, I know…) would never take anything she says as credible–and ensure readers understand that her credibility is zilch.
I know this won’t happen, but we should hold reporters and editors to account when they accept her statements at face value without confirmation.
Aside: Leavitt also appears to be responsible for one judge upholding an injunction on the OMB memos. Great day at the office!

The entire story is even more stupid than that.
Someone did find $83 million dollars going to Gaza, but forgot to read the description of the grant.
The money was going to the government of Mozambique to fund health care in two of its provinces, Inhambane and Gaza.
Oops.
