Professional Democrats Are Bad at Their Jobs: The Inability to Push Narratives Edition

In a very good New Yorker article about how Biden isn’t senile and convicted rapist and serial fraudster Donald Trump is (would be hard pressed to know that based on most reporting), a former Republican strategist makes a very good observation about professional Democrats (boldface mine):

That was no accident, according to Sarah Longwell, a former Republican strategist and a founder of the Bulwark news site. “Democrats do not build their own echo chambers the way Republicans do,” she said. “It’s a strange communications differential. It’s not rocket science: you create a narrative, you are relentless about promoting it, you have a million people all working from the same sheet of paper.” She continued, “I know that this is a thing with Democrats—it’s like herding cats—but if Biden is not the strongest communicator, why aren’t there hundreds of surrogates for him? Having spent a long time on the Republican side, I am constantly flabbergasted by the inability of Democrats to prosecute a case against Republicans relentlessly, with a knife in their teeth.”

There are a lot of reasons why this happens, but that it does is unquestionable, and it is, in no small part, why Democrats might lose this election. Professional Democrats need to understand that you have to repeat things over and over: once or twice won’t cut (Pelosi and Schumer were/are awful at this by the way). Too many professional Democrats think the political part of politics is beneath them, and we need new professional Democrats, sooner rather than later.

  1. Dave Dell says:

That relentless message seems to be done from non-politicians such as Colbert, Oliver, Meyers, etc. How hard is it for the Dem establishment to do the same? Well…

There are so many problems that have no real-world solutions without overwhelming effort of time and money from a united citizenry. The average person can only do something about these problems in vanishingly small increments. Hopelessly small increments.

To me, this means that the Dem message is a hard sell. You’re trying to sell something that is an inconvenience. Tearing things down is a much easier sell. Seemingly, any hack can make a good living doing it.

Personally, I think the Dems need a Huey Long (sans corruption). Lets tear down some things. Dems need to adopt the Philadelphia Flyers Gritty attitude. Rouse some rabble. A rabble in arms?
