Stop Rehabilitating George W. Bush

Last week, Little Lord Pontchartrain SLAMMED! NAILED! EVISCERATED! DISEMBOWLED! Il Trumpe. Could what passes for the kinda left stop slobbering over him? He was an awful president. Not only was his presidency the only time I have ever worried about what I should and should not say, but he also prosecuted an immoral war and failed the city of New Orleans (though it remains, over the long term, to see how that will compare with Puerto Rico). He also failed to stop the housing bubble and subsequent crisis, even though the FBI wanted to bring charges (if you don’t think that didn’t play a role in Trump’s victory, you haven’t been paying attention).

But we’ve had lots of bad presidential policy (remember that Chris Mooney’s The Republican War on Science was first published in 2005): Bush did something worse. He normalized torture. Once you’ve normalized torture, there really isn’t much further to fall, other than ethnic cleansing and genocide.

Plenty of people who were right for the right reasons (to twist a phrase*) are EVISCERATING! Il Trumpe. Don’t rehabilitate a horrible president who degraded the American ideal.

*For you young’uns, many Iraq War supporters (a fair number of whom were torture apologists too) claimed they were ‘wrong for the right reasons’, the implication of which is that those of us who opposed the Iraq War were right for the wrong reasons.

… and failed the city of New Orleans (though it remains, over the long term, to see how that will compare with Puerto Rico).

Which is worse, ineptitude or disregard?

Yes, but if you want to erode support for Trump from the right, you need to raise up the, periodically, sane things said by those on the right.
