    The article about Yiddish was fascinating and the demographic discussion was disturbing. I was just telling my 7yo nephew that Yiddish was basically German with some Hebrew, and it’s always enjoyable learning that everything I think I know might be wrong.

    I enjoyed Koestler’s “The Thirteenth Tribe”, accept that it’s not taken seriously, and am gratified to find that he was wrestling with a puzzle which still hasn’t been solved. Linguistics would appear to be a weaker approach to the most such questions than genetics, but in this case, who knows?

    The difficult part of the narrative is that during the Middle Ages Jews were generally tolerated and often valued. They certainly weren’t in the British Isles, but they must have been in other places, otherwise they wouldn’t have been such handy targets of Crusades and pogroms.
