This Is Why I Left Long Island

By way of Amanda, I came across this bit of political ‘humor’ from a Long Island weekly. I’m not reprinting it, because I don’t put racist sewage on this site (“someday I hope people will call me Doctor YoMama” in reference to Obama is just a taste).

I’ve lived in several parts of the country, and there were enclaves in Long Island that were more overtly racist than anywhere else–and that includes Virginia, where I grew up. Once you get to much of white middle class Nassau and Long Island, it’s like (or worse than) the South, but without any of the manners.

That Long Island article was painful to read (in fact, I only read about half of it). Thank you for including the link without pasting it in this post–you’re right to keep it off ScienceBlogs!

    For what it is worth.
They pulled the article and apologized.

Wow, I must have grown up in a different part of Long Island because I thought racism was a thing of the past (and some old people) when I was growing up. I got the shock of a lifetime when I moved to Tennessee.

    a) Those towns in the masthead are very much Suffolk (east), not Nassau, Co.
    b) Every time I have to slam on my brakes to avoid killing some idiot jaywalking across the Nassau Tpk. I get juuust a bit more misanthropic in general. Were I not willfully colorblind to the ethnicity of said idiots I fear that the seeds of racism could germinate in me, too.
    c) Odd that according to their apology the column was removed from their website, yet Mike’s link still works.
    d) You’re a nut if you think that Long Island is more racist than Virginia. I mean, enclave for enclave.

Regarding c) this may be stupidity and not malice. They put a link in the main page pointing to to the apology, so that new people that click on it get the apology. They may not know or have overlooked the fact that their database backend keeps the old copy hanging around unless someone actually goes in and removes it.

  6. Craig says:

Having said that, Googling “Low Tidings Obama” brings up several pages that have the actual print article scanned in. Oops. That will look good when future employers google the people that are associated with this.
