Another day, another Republican attempt to further reduce the freedoms of the residents of the colonial territory of the District of Columbia. The Republican-controlled Financial Services and General Government Subcommittee released its 2026 bill. In it are some real gems, including a provision to recognize “valid concealed carry licenses from other states in the District of Columbia and the Washington Metropolitan Area.”

Mind you, they can’t force Maryland or Virginia to recognize out-of-state concealed carry permits because they are sovereign states (the meth labs of democracy ‘n shit). But, as conservatives have done for decades, they can force D.C. to recognize out-of-colony concealed carry permits. Which is insane.

I don’t know if they have ever been to a protest in D.C., but people can get extremely vehement. Introducing concealed weapons into the mix is a really bad idea. And I don’t want to think what Dec. 12, 2020* or Jan. 6, 2021 would have been like if people from out-of-colony would have been allowed to carry concealed firearms.

That said, if this does come to pass, conservatives might feel differently if groups like Redneck Revolt or the John Brown Rifle Club decide to protest outside the Heritage Foundation.

Republicans are very stupid people who don’t know what they’re doing. Actually, it’s worse: they think they know what they’re doing, but don’t realize they’re actually doing something else.

*Most people outside of D.C. have no idea about Dec. 12, 2020, but a bunch of Proud Boys went on a rampage. It’s why the evening of Jan. 5, 2021, D.C. made an extraordinary and unprecedented effort** to get homeless people off of the street because they were worried they would be attacked by the Jan. 6 attendees. They were correct about the violence, just wrong about the target.

**The D.C. government and homeless advocacy groups were working together. Willingly.
