Regarding the Boston Globe article, I find it difficult to empathize with the Chaldean-Americans who find their community disrupted by Trump’s crackdown.
I’ve lived in the Detroit metropolitan area most of my adult life, and due to my work in health care in south Oakland County, I’ve had occasion to deal extensively with the Chaldean population (including very recent immigrants) since the 1980’s. While admittedly anecdotal, my experience has been that no ethnic or racial group (either American or foreign born) more universally avails themselves of our diminishing social safety net than Chaldeans (with the possible exception of the Orthodox Jewish population that’s emigrated from the former USSR). I’m willing to bet not a single Chaldean has arrived from Iraq without landing on public assistance. At the same time, my experience in local politics has been that Chaldeans are generally supportive of the Republican Party, i.e., the people that would eliminate that social safety net entirely.
While much of local Arab-American community supported the anti-war effort in 2003, Chaldeans were much more supportive of the (illegal) invasion and occupation of Iraq (understandable I suppose, given their hatred of Saddam Hussein, but at the same time I couldn’t help but notice exactly none of the young people I worked with had served in the US military or felt compelled to lend their talents by enlisting).
My impression is that Chaldeans seem to have been all to willing to effectively ‘pull the ladder up behind them’ by supporting Republicans and Republican policies (something I’ve also witnessed in my own Italian family, although it took several generations for the transition from Democrat to Republican). There’s just something intrinsically hypocritical about people who rely on Medicaid and SNAP voicing full-throated support for Republicans.
It’s unfortunate it’s taken Trump’s policies to make (some) Chaldeans realize that they’re just another Arab to the white nationalists that are the Republican Party in 2019, but it’s not like this happened overnight- while Trump is definitely a snake of a different order, he’s not a cause- he’s a symptom.
