When the War Comes Home

Last week, in response to CBP agents holding three undocumented children hostage in an attempt to get their parents to turn themselves in, this tweet trundled across the transom:

Normalizing torture abroad helped deaden many of us to similar methods here. The rot runs far deeper than the Trump administration. Wars always come home, and never for the better.

Stuff like this is more evidence ICE needs to be abolished, and something a lot less lawless replace it.
That said, the goonish behavior isn’t happening in a vacuum. The people doing this were trained and their actions authorized. Some of the training (and trainers) originated in a place where conditions are considerably worse than in the US of A.

^^^ September 12, 2018 – From the acting Deputy Director of ICE to the current Chief of Police in Washington DC, from San Diego to Chicago to Atlanta, since 2002 thousands of American law enforcement officials have trained in Israel with Israeli police, military and the Shin Bet. And thousands more have participated in security conferences and workshops with Israeli military, law enforcement and security officials held in the U.S. ^^^

What do those trainers do back home?
^^^ (Jerusalem) – Israeli security forces have used unnecessary force to arrest or detain Palestinian children as young as 11. Security forces have choked children, thrown stun grenades at them, beaten them in custody, threatened and interrogated them without the presence of parents or lawyers, and failed to let their parents know their whereabouts. ^^^

It comes down to US security forces at all levels being taught (and encouraged) to treat US citizens as Palestinians. Again, the brutality shown by ICE and Police most definitely isn’t happening in a vacuum.
