Is The Plural Of Bacteriophage, A “Vile”?

There’s an interesting Vice article about bacteriophage (viruses that infect bacteria) and their potential usefulness in killing bacteria. But this photo caption cracked me up:

vilebacteriophages

It’s vial, not “vile.” Though that would be a great name for the plural of bacteriophage…

  1. Unfortunately, James Lipton’s most recent (1991) edition of An Exaltation of Larks is called “The Ultimate Edition,” https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/511205.An_Exaltation_of_Larks
so it might be difficult to get him to revise it in order to add “a vile of bacteriophages.”
