Re: Jill Stein and voting for 3rd parties — People like myself are voting 3rd party because we want there to be more choices on the ballot every election cycle. This requires a series of voting reforms in addition to allowing more than the major two parties to participate. Because of the various laws governing who can and cannot participate in debates and gain access to the ballot, most states allow for 3rd party ballot status to be gained by earning enough votes to be an arbitrary percentage of the biggest state- or federal-wide race on the ballot that year. Usually this is Senator but every four years it’s President.
The biggest obstacle is that both parties have rigged the laws so that they can do whatever they feel like — including (a) having their nominating convention AFTER the deadline to qualify for the ballot and still make it (McCain/Obama 2008) and also (b) not submitting their paperwork in time or with enough signatures but finding their name placed on the ballot anyway. But, in Texas for example, 3rd parties have to gather 100s of thousands of signatures from people who are registered to vote but did not vote in the last primary election. And if they succeed in submitting enough signatures, they are immediately taken to court by one of the major parties to prevent them from gaining ballot status. We don’t have a democracy or a republic, we have more of an oligarchy with the two major political parties controlling the apparatus rather than a cabal of billionaires (not that the cabal of billionaires isn’t also doing their part….)
