Re Gen-X economic woes: Got my B.A. in 1987. My recollection was that the job market was pretty ugly. It took me about a month to find a job – spent quality time with the Globe’s Help Wanted section every day. It paid the equivalent of mid-30s in 2016 dollars. (NB: A STEM degree was not a golden ticket by any stretch of the imagination.) Got a better job in the fall but decided to go to grad school and did a year later, thereby avoiding the nasty job market. It was much better when I finished up in the mid-90s.
