I disagree heavily on the “give the GOP 4 years”. While they couldn’t do that much ‘damage’ re: the economy, revoking the ACA, etc, given a filibuster, one thing the Democrats in the Senate (even if they win it, which still seems likely) can NOT stop are the Judicial appointments.
The GOP, if they win, is going to suddenly pull the “crisis” card they’ve been holding for the last 4 years – the benches are EMPTY! we have to appoint justices NOW!!!!!
Thus, all the gaps, all the appointments left empty, even though approved unanimously by committee, in the federal structure would get filled by pro-religious, anti-rights yes-men to the Right-Wing.
Add to that the likelihood of at least one SCOTUS appointment coming in the next 4 years, possibly two as the liberals on the bench continue to age?
A six-three majority and it is all over. Done with. No recovery.
So no, giving them “4 years” is not giving them 4 years: it is giving them the right to rubber-stamp their agenda for all eternity, as far as our own lives are concerned. The damage to my daughter’s young life is incalculable.
ok, the post does account for that, but believes the risk is more 2020 than 2016 for the bench to open. I disagree here.
