Rightwing Mobs Set Up Armed Checkpoints in Nevada

It’s safe to say that the right is no longer playing at insurrection, but is actually denying other citizens their right to free assembly (boldface mine):

A Democratic congressman from Nevada said in a letter this week that his constituents have reported the armed militia supporting rancher Cliven Bundy have set up checkpoints to verify the residency of anybody passing through.

Rep. Steven Horsford (D-NV), who represents the area, sent the letter Sunday to Clark County Sheriff Doug Gillespie, asking him to investigate.

“I am writing to bring your attention to the ongoing situation in northeastern Clark County which has caused many of my constituents to fear for their safety,” Horsford wrote. Residents in the area “have expressed concern over the continual presence of multiple out-of-state, armed militia groups that have remained in the community” since Bundy’s dispute with the Bureau of Land Management came to a boil.

The militia, as reported by Horsford’s constituents, “have set up checkpoints where residents are required to prove they live in the area before being allowed to pass,” the letter said.

They have also maintained a presence, sometimes armed, along highways and roads, as well as community sites like churches and schools, the letter asserted.

So that there is no doubt: we have armed rightwing Palinist mobs using the threat of violence to deny people their constitutional rights. With this, the far right has moved from revisionist, romantic blather to the use of force. Let’s turn it over to Thers:

Anyway, what we have here is a situation where a relatively small minority of Americans are claiming the right, ultimately backed up by their possession of weapons, to define the True Nature of American Freedom.

Which is fine, I guess, at least according to CNN…

How this differs in any important philosophical regard from the position, of, say, the Provisional Irish Republican Army, I cannot say.

How it differs in any practical sense, well (McVeigh cough) who knows.

We don’t want or need another Ruby Ridge, but the U.S. government needs to assert the rule of law. Enough already.

It is not just the Federal gov’t that needs to enforce the law. Nevada’s laws are being broken, as well.

What exactly do they think they are going to do if someone from out of the area wants to drive through there? I wish I lived nearby. I would be pretty tempted to see. Also, this sounds a lot like wrongful imprisonment or whatever Nevada’s version of sort-of kidnapping is called
