Space and Language

In some recent conversations with biotech and venture capital people, I’ve noticed that they like to use the word space–it seems to be quite the fashionable word. Here’s a sample usage:

Mike the Mad Biologist is in the ‘calling people fucking morons’ blogging space.

No one says occupy, but “is in” (or are in). It’s being used as a synonym for niche or area. That’s fine, I suppose, but it also reveals something very interesting: I doubt Amazon, Google, or Facebook think this way.

They want to be in ALL THE SPACES! (or is it all the space?)

Regardless, this is an exciting paradigm shift in the linguistic space.
