Hippie Chic

Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts has opened its Hippie Chic exhibit. Bona-fide hippies will probably not like it (think of the more recent equivalent of high-fashion pseudo-grunge), but the clothes are pretty interesting. First, some shoes (wanted to put this up front since I know Dr. Isis is busy…):

Some rotating displays. His:

And, yes, the display base is covered with shag carpet:

Before you laugh too hard, it’s not like the 80s were any better….

Speaking as someone who was a 60s era teen, it’s interesting to see those clothes presented like that, because you lose the context, and since actual sixties and hippy-style clothing was street fashion the context is a major part of the fashion. You’d need a street fashion photog like Bill Cunningham to do them justice. They’ve also picked perhaps the least street of the clothes, especially the men’s stuff.

But it really doesn’t work on fashion mannequins.
