One thing about the sequestration (the across the board budget cuts that will take place March 1) that most people don’t realize is that they are supposed to be the new baseline, the ‘new normal.’ I suspect a lot of people believe these cuts will be temporary, that when the economy recovers and crisis is averted (although that won’t happen without an increase in federal deficit spending…), budgets will rise again.
They won’t. The cuts we’re seeing will essentially be the new baseline. That decreased payline at NIH? Cuts to the CDC budget? The plan is that those cuts will not be restored. While the details of the cuts might differ somewhat if a deal is reached, on the whole, compared to where we are today, most things will be cut.
We have so much to fix, and so much new to build, but we would actually cut back across the board. This is how we crush the future and the hope (remember hope?) of an entire generation.
This is no way to run a country.
Kill the sequester.
This is another reason why we can’t have nice things.
